RICH IN HISTORY

The Amerindians called Nevis “Oualie, land of beautiful waters”. Columbus first laid eyes on Nevis in 1493. West Africans were brought to Nevis because of their agricultural, masonry and blacksmith skills and they provided labor for the sugar plantations until slavery was abolished in 1834. The majority of Nevis’ citizens trace their descent from these African roots. Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Treasury Secretary appointed by George Washington and an early visionary of the Federal Reserve banking system in place today, was born in Nevis in 1757 and lived there as a child before moving to St. Croix, USVI and eventually on to the U.S.
